Will Eno play to hit Broadway with some big stars

NEW YORK (AP) — A play about four people who share the same last name is coming to Broadway with some awfully big names attached.

Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei and Tracy Letts are set to star in Will Eno's play "The Realistic Joneses" early next year. Previews are set to begin in February and an opening scheduled at a theater to be announced for late March.

In the play, two couples both with the surname Jones discover they have more in common than just their names. Eno, who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his one-man show "Thom Pain (based on nothing)," also wrote "Middletown," ''Title and Deed" and "Oh, the Humanity and other exclamations," a collection of five short plays.

Collette has a Golden Globe and Emmy Award for "United States of Tara," Hall earned a Golden Globe with "Dexter," Tomei won an Oscar with "My Cousin Vinny" and Letts has won Tony Awards for acting in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and for writing "August: Osage County."

"The Realistic Joneses" first ran at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 2012 with Letts aboard. Sam Gold also returns to direct the Broadway version. Producers include Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Jam Theatricals, Stacey Mindich and Susan Gallin and Mary Lu Roffe.

'Nature' Is Back To Show You Both Adorable Otters And Sad Science

In the last couple of years, there's been a surge of what you might call "cool PBS," by which I just mean social-media-friendly stuff like Sherlock and Downton Abbey that sort of expands people's ideas of what public television is and especially what its relationship to pop culture is.

But that's not a reason to overlook classic, documentary-making, nature-liking, animal-hugging PBS, which brings us to tonight's return of Nature, produced by WNET in New York, which debuts its new season Wednesday night with "Saving Otter 501." (8:00 pm in many places, but check your local listings, as always.)

This is the story of how the Monterey Bay Aquarium makes its 501st attempt to save an orphaned otter and release her back into the wild. They feed her, they teach her, they even place her with a surrogate mother. (The whole thing is narrated by Daniel Stern, which, for children of the '80s, gives it a whole nostalgic Wonder Otter Years quality that's downright diabolical.) While the special contains more adorable, awesome otter footage than you can shake a ... flipper? ... at, it doesn't take a monster to ask the question: Is this worth it, for one baby otter?

Well, as it turns out, California's wild otter population is pretty tiny and heavily concentrated, and there's that funny thing about ecosystems: otters are one of the few predators that urchins have, and urchins eat kelp, so if you follow the math, otters are necessary to protect kelp from being overrun in the creation of — no kidding — "urchin barrens." Yikes.

There's a nice line-straddling here between "Look at nature; nature is cool!" and "Look how much we're having to do just to keep from wiping out this entire animal, like, as a thing that exists." The scientists are careful to stress that this is only worth doing if it ultimately benefits the wild population, not if it results in a bunch of hand-raised otters being released into Monterey Bay to take food out of the mouths of the wild otters that remain.

They've been making Nature for 30 years; long enough that I remember griping about my parents using our first VCR to tape it when I undoubtedly was desperate to tape something else (probably something terrible). It might not be slick, but it's entertaining and informative, and if you're wildlife-minded, it's worth remembering that it's still there, as lovely as ever.

Ed Scantling to step down as education dean - UNK News

KEARNEY – Ed Scantling, dean of UNK’s College of Education, announced his decision to return to the faculty ranks at the end of academic year 2013-14.

Charles Bicak, senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, informed deans and directors on Oct. 15.

Scantling became dean of education in June 2006, after two years as associate dean. Prior to that he was chairman of UNK’s department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, from 1998 to 2004.

Scantling is a former high school and collegiate wrestling coach, previously serving as head wrestling coach for the Lopers. Before coming to UNK in 1985 Scantling was an instructor of physical education at the University of Northern Colorado, and before that, a high school teacher in Clear Lake (Lakeport, Calif.) High School. He served as assistant wrestling coach at Northern Colorado and head wrestling coach in Lakeport.

Bicak, in his note to deans and directors, pointed out Scantling’s accomplishments for the college, community, and for the university.

“Ed has guided the college (of Education) through a highly successful NCATE reaccreditation, overseen advances in all five departments, enhanced the fundraising within the college and launched several important academic initiatives,” Bicak said. “These include collaborative workshops with Kearney Public School teachers and UNK faculty, the One Room/One Teacher recognition program, the advancement of the iPad initiative, approval of the Early Childhood Unified Endorsement online degree completion program and grant-supported outreach efforts in communication disorders.

“This is a better university because of Ed Scantling. Chancellor Kristensen and I are grateful for his service as dean. He will be hard to replace.”

Scantling will return to teaching in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, soon to be renamed the department of Kinesiology and Sports Science.

An expert scholar and research in physical education and recreation, Scantling has had numerous articles published in journals such as “Physical Education, Recreation and Dance,” and “Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators.” He has written two textbooks on fitness education, “Fitness Education: Teaching Concepts-Based Fitness in the Schools” (1997), and “Fitness Education: Ideas and Implications for Secondary Schools” (1996).

For his efforts as a faculty member Scantling has received the Leland Holdt Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001 and the Pratt-Heins Faculty Award for Service in 2005.

Scantling said, “It has been an honor to serve as the Dean of the College of Education over the last eight years. I would like to thank the Chancellor and Dr. Bicak for their support of the College of Education and express my gratitude to the chairs and faculty members of the COE for their dedication to UNK.”

Scantling earned his bachelor’s from Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif.; his master’s from University of Northern Colorado and his doctorate from University of New Mexico.

Bicak said a search for a new dean of education will begin shortly.
